STUDENT COUNSELLOR

AKU’s Student Counseling and Development Office is seeking a qualified counselor with substantial experience of offering Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy or another cognitive approach, preferably in a university setting. The appointee will provide an integrated, effective counseling service for students in Uganda reporting to the Director Student Experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide effective and confidential counseling service (usually short term).
  • Promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing by organizing relevant workshops for students and
  • Refer students to other support services as appropriate.
  • Produce assessments and other reports as required by the university.
  • Maintain records and statistics in line with the university’s confidentiality of data protection policy.
  • Under Lake research in areas relevant to student development and wellness which may be in collaboration with other professionals where appropriate.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation of the counseling services within the university.
  • Supervise and support where appropriate, the work of other staff working with students.
The key decisions among others the counselor will be responsible for include
  • Ascertaining the need for Psychiatric referral.
  • Prioritizing Psycho - education activities based on the needs of students.
  • Determining when to forward the student issue to concerned authorities
Requirements
  • The ideal candidate must possess a Honor’s Degree in Psychology/ Counseling Psychology/ Educational Psyellology
  • Post graduate Doctorial level training in Clinical, Counseling or Educational Psychology
  • 4/5 years of experience as a counselor with administrative and substantial experience of offering Cognitive Behavior Therapy [CBT], Cognitive Analytic Therapy {CAT} or another cognitive approach, preferably in a comparable setting.
  • Ability to use complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management Frequently requiring sustained and intense condemnation
  • Should be able to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of high emotive and distressing problems
