JOB DETAILS:
The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research and capacity development. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University-John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach.
The Infectious Diseases Institute has received funding from Bio-fire LLC to conduct a 9-month research. The rationale is to evaluate the clinical sensitivity and specificity of the assays comprising the Film Array Global Fever Panel.

In the study, whole blood will be collected from individuals with or have recently had acute febrile illness in Arua and Mubende RRH. The performance data will support classification of the FilmArray GF Panel as an in vitro diagnostic device by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other comparable regulatory agencies.
In order to fully support the implementation of the study, IDI seeks to recruit for the following positions as indicated below;

Job Title: Laboratory Assistant/Technician (2)

Reports to: Study Medical Officer
Duty Station: Arua & Mubende

Job Summary
The laboratory assistant will support collection, packaging, transportation, storage and retrieval of patient sample. S/he will also co-ordinate lab logistics and ensure timely transfer of samples to the testing lab in Kampala.

Role & Responsibilities
  • Establish robust and sustainable sample collection and samples referral system from the study site to testing lab in Kampala
  • Conduct routine lab tests on the patients for clinical care
  • Proper documentation of laboratory test result and dispatch of results
  • Track sample movement from the patient up to receipt of results
  • Conduct quality control on the lab samples and study forms
Educational requirements:
  • Basic qualification: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Certificate from Allied Health Professionals’ Council
  • Additional qualification: Training in Good Clinical Lab Practice and biosafety and biosecurity
Working Experience and skills
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with a research project
  • Working experience in sample transportation activities
  • Good aseptic sample collection techniques
