The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment, Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University-John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach program.

In order to achieve the above, Outreach seeks to recruit a highly motivated, result-oriented and dynamic candidate for the position below;

Job Title: Locum SMC Nurse
Project: E- AMAKA Project

Reports to: Team Leader, Expanded AMAKA Project
Work Station: Kira HC III, Wakiso District

Job Summary:
The SMC Nurse will work within the IDI Outreach Programme Medical function to assist the surgical teams during safe MMC procedures and to provide quality nursing care. He/ she must treat each client with dignity and respect.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist surgical teams during MMC procedures.
  • Ensure eligibility for and assist circumcisers in conducting the circumcision procedure.
  • Provide immediate post-operative care for clients.
  • Participate in the provision of TT vaccinations for SMC clients under the oversight of the EPI focal person at the supported sites.
  • Maintain client records as required cognizant of standard ethical requirements.
  • Ensure procedures are carried out safely in accordance with agreed policies.
Educational requirements
  • Completion of a registered Nurses Diploma Training from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience in provision of Safe Male Circumcision service, clinical and surgical setting.
  • SMC skills Training and Certification is required.
    Knowledge, abilities and skills:
  • Ability to communicate with clients in local language.
  • Knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS related issues.
  • Knowledge of good nursing procedures, practices and ethics.
