Established in 1988, the MRC/ UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the evolving epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. The Unit’s head offices are located at the Uganda Virus Research Institute- Entebbe Campus, and the main research activities in Masaka, Kalungu, Kampala and Wakiso districts, including the peri-urban areas of Entebbe. The Unit is now seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to fill the following position:

Nursing Officer (01 Position)
Position Code: NO1018
Reports to: Study Coordinator
Duty station: Mengo.
Contract Duration: 6 Months, renewable
Start Date: As soon as possible

Job Purpose: The overall responsibility of the post holder will be recruitment, clinical evaluation and care of research participants.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Participant recruitment and retention- Obtains informed consent, screens for study eligibility, enrols and follows up study participants.
  • Clinical care- Provides clinical care, counselling, sample collection, results giving and conducts referrals as appropriate. Has to escort referrals whenever necessary.
  • Data collection and management- Collects data as required by the protocol, completes source documents and CRFs and submits them for data entry, and resolves queries
  • Prescription of Investigational Product (IP) and other drugs - Administers drugs or intervention to study clients
  • Administrative- requests from stores and participates/ monitors stock taking of drugs, sundries and clinical equipment.
  • MO designee duties- performs other duties assigned by the study medical officer according to professional ethics and conduct of human research
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a recognised.
  • Possession of other relevant training e.g. short courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, management of specific conditions e.g. HIV, STIs, reproductive health, Pre Prophylaxis Exposure and Post Exposure Prophylaxis among others of added advantage
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a clinical practice.
  • Experience working in a research setting will be of added advantage.
  • Experience working with key populations.
  • Clear understanding of how to screen, diagnose and treat common acute and chronic diseases and how to apply appropriate referral protocols.
  • Knowledge of preventive health-care interventions including but not limited to HIV/AIDS
  • Understanding of ICH/GCP guidelines for human research.
  • Knowledge of research study protocols and practices.
  • Understanding Phases of clinical trials.
  • Understanding social behavioural science research
  • Appropriate and up-to-date licensure to provide clinical care.
  • Computer Competency including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
